We got up about 6:30. There was a beautiful sunrise this morning - lots of pinks. The photo on the left above shows the sunrise reflected in Nahmakanta Lake with a canoe in the foreground. The center photo shows the light just before the sun peeked over the mountain. The photo on the right shows early morning light reflected off of the light through some reeds and grasses. The photo on the left above shows some of the autumn colors reflected in Nahmakanta Lake. The photo on the right is the same hillside, but panning the camera sets the trees in motion. Breakfast was french toast. We talked some after breakfast, mostly about things to see in the area. Also a small photo review, carried over from last night. It's easier to see the shared pictures in the daylight than by propane light. Today, Carl and I took off heading for a segment of the Appalachian Trail which passes by another lake overlook. This segment starts at the road and climbs to the overlook, then climbs on to the top of Mount Nesuntabunt (el. 1560). We stopped several times for pictures, including some in the "leprechaun forest" - places where the moss was so thick and lush that you'd swear you could see leprechauns. We ate lunch on the very top, saving our apples for the return trip. We polished those off when we returned to the lake overlook. The photo on the left above shows a hemlock cone. The center photo shows a maple leaf stuck in a pine stump. The photo on the right shows some moss and a mushroom. The photos above all feature two different mosses growing next to each other. The photo on the left above shows Nahmakanta Lake and the surrounding countryside from the overlook part way up the trail. The photo on the right focuses in on the beach with the boats pulled up onto shore. The photo on the left above shows some mosses and shamrocks. The center photo shows a mushroom growing on a root among moss. The photo on the right shows just how moss covered the rocks on this mountain were. The photo on the left above shows Nahmakanta Lake from Mount Nesuntabunt. Polliwog Stream is just visible on the left side of the photo. The center photo shows how the trail was criss-crossed with roots. The photo on the right shows maple and birch leaves against the sky. We got back to cabin about 3 and put our feet up for a while, once again sipping tea while rocking on the cabin porch. It had been a rough trail - lots of roots, rocks, and slippery leaves. It included two sets of rock steps that the local AT club had installed. There was a flotilla of kayaks before dinner when lake was calm. About half a dozen of the kayaks went out on the lake. Some of the people were trying kayaks for the first time. We applauded them! The photo to the right shows the dock and autumn colors reflected in the lake near sunset. Eddie had everyone over for “Howling Wolves” before dinner - coffee, brandy, Bailey’s, whipping cream. Yum! Dinner was turkey and all the trimmings with three berry pie for dessert. We finished the day with showers, cribbage, and then crashed into bed. |
