Like Gatlinburg, the traffic didn’t stop until the wee hours of the morning. This was an older building on the main drag with no air conditioning, so I had the window open. I finally found the oscillating fan, which helped, but still left the window open 1/3 of the way all night. As a result, it was noisy. And the lovely wooden blinds didn’t shut all the way and there was a streetlight right outside the window. It was like leaving the light on all night.... I finally gave up and got up on Monday morning and packed. I left right after breakfast and headed on up Highway 101 to near Astoria, where I headed inland, crossing the Columbia River at Longview, where I connected with I-5 and headed back to Mom and Dad’s. My brother and his family were there. They had spent the previous night there so that his wife and daughter could spend some time with me. Right. His wife was involved in other things and his daughter got a sudden attack of the shy’s and didn’t speak to me at all. I did a quick load of laundry and got most of it put away before the rest of the company arrived. Two of Dad's brothers and one of his sisters showed up for a visit and dinner. There were nine of us at dinner that night. It wasn’t as bad as I thought it could have been. At one point, I watched Dad and his brothers walk down the driveway and Dad was in the best shape, physically, of the three of them! Everyone left shortly after dinner. My brother and his family had to catch the ferry back to the mainland and, since it was the last evening of a holiday weekend, thought they’d leave early enough to catch the next to last one of the day. That way, if it were too crowded, worst case, they’d be first in line for the last ferry of the day. |
