I met Julie for breakfast. She’s a part owner of a pharmaceutical company in Manhattan. She had spent the previous day shooting waterfalls and such in the area just outside of Portland. She’s a nice lady. After breakfast, I reloaded my rental car. Bill arrived a little after nine. His cell phone had died, so we left it recharging in my room while we went in search of a gas station. He also left his gear in my rental car. He had gotten a smaller rental for the first part of his stay in Oregon and was turning it in for a minivan for the phototour. Finally found a gas station. There are no self-serve gas stations in Oregon? State law. Something about fighting unemployment... Prices were on a par with Washington, however, so it must not have added too much overhead. Then on to the airport. Bill turned in his car and I headed for baggage claim to meet Deb (she and I have roomed together on several Bill trips), whose plane was due to arrive eminently. Found out it was almost 45 minutes late, so I had a bit of a wait. Spent it people watching.... Bill arrived at baggage claim just minutes before Deb did. We picked up her luggage and we went out to the minivan. Bill had had some problems getting it, so it was probably a good thing Deb's plane was late. Back to the hotel where we found Julie waiting in the lobby. Bill retrieved his cell phone and we all spent some time getting acquainted. Then Bill drove back to the airport to retrieve the fourth participant, Maryellen, a police officer in the Boston area and another nice lady. Now that our group was complete, we loaded the gear into the minivan and headed south. Deb rode in my rental car and Julie and Maryellen joined Bill in the minivan. Other than a gas stop (for my rental car) and lunch and a couple of rest areas, we didn’t stop much until we arrived in Bandon Beach, where we had an early dinner and watched the sun set over the harbor area. Nice location, but the food was expensive. On to Port Orford, where our hotel was. We settled in for the night - all our rooms were on the second floor of the two story hotel. Bill helped carry luggage up... This is an older hotel - probably been there for fifty years or more and some of the equipment showed that age. But it was quiet, the beds were comfortable, and the location was just right for the next three nights. |
