Sunday, May 24
We left home about 12:30 after a quiet morning, packing leisurely, read the paper, etc. Kind of a different start to a trip. Our next door neighbor came out as we were pulling out of the driveway and we talked with him for a while. He’s mowing the grass for us while we’re gone. We stopped in a Best Western in Jackson, TN, for the night, after a rainy day of driving. Twice it got so heavy that the road was hard to see. This would turn into a portent for the rest of the trip. We had dinner at the Lone Star Steakhouse. We both ate too much... Monday, May 25 We got up about 6:30 and had breakfast at the hotel. Repacked our bags and the car and headed west. It was a fairly uneventful day. There were a few sprinkles, but nothing like the rain of yesterday. We stopped for lunch at a noisy Cracker Barrel in Russelville, Ark. They didn’t have any vegetable soup today. Wonder if the fact that it’s Memorial Day is the reason why, or did the waitress just not know about it? One of our pit stops was at a truck stop with only a single commode per sex. As a result, there was a long line at the bathroom. A couple of us let a very pregnant girl go first... Surprise! Oklahoma is green! We stopped for the night at a Comfort Inn at El Reno, OK We were in the mood for a pizza and beer, but the place mentioned on El Reno website looked like a dive when we drove by it... We wound up with tossed salads with chicken and malts at a place called Braums, which must be an Oklahoma chain. That state is the only one I saw signs for them. Yum! Very nice choice. The only problem was that the air conditioner in the restaurant was set to arctic... So, we went back to room and made tea... Tuesday, May 26 We got up about 6:30 again. Breakfast was downstairs in the lobby. It’s a rainy morning. We stopped at Walgreen’s for some vitamins and hand lotion, then drove by the post office to mail some bills... We finally got on the road about 8:30. The rain soon stopped and the day turned beautiful. Lunch was in Amarillo at another Cracker Barrel - vegetable soup and tea, our usual. The terrain is still greener than usual. We encountered rain squalls between Tucumcari and Moriarty. They were just quick squalls, soon passing by. The temperature dropped 10 degrees with the rain. We got to Albuquerque and drove around a little on the way to the hotel. My high school looks both smaller and larger than I remembered - there are more buildings, but the older buildings look smaller. We finally got to the hotel, a Quality Suites on San Antonio. We had stayed there a little over a year ago on a previous trip. We unloaded car and hit the exercise room. It sure felt good! Then we cleaned up and headed for Sweet Tomatoes for a good dinner before heading back to the hotel. The air conditioner in this room doesn’t work quite right. We watched a couple of old movies on tv before turning the lights off early. |
