Friday, September 22 We slept very well. I was up about 6 and just goofed off until breakfast time. Breakfast opened about 8. After a leisurely breakfast, we walked to the Aquabus Landing which would take us across to Granville Island. The photo on the left above shows the Burrard Street Bridge from the landing where we were to catch the Aquabus. The center photo shows the same bridge with two brave kayakers paddling along among the heavy water traffic along this waterway. The photo on the right shows an Aquabus pulling away from the Hornby Street Landing. This one was full, so we waited for the next one. They ran about every five minutes or so all day long. The photo on the left shows the Hornby Street Dock, where we waited to catch the Aquabus. The yellow building across the water is where we would wind up having dinner this evening. The center photo shows some of the downtown buildings from Granville Island, where we would spend most of the day. The photo on the right shows another view of the downtown buildings across the waterway. Carl and Kelly went on a whale watching excursion. I roamed the marketplace and other sites on the island. I wound up walking a total of 4.5 miles for the day. The photo on the left shows some of the flowers for sale in the Granville Island Market. The photo on the right shows the autumn decorations outside one of the market doors. . . . . The photo on the left shows a display of decorative pumpkins for sale at the Market. The center photo shows some of the chaos inside the Market - which would get worse tomorrow (between tomorrow being Saturday and rainy, it was very crowded). The photo on the right shows some of the mountains of berries available for purchase. There were at least three produce stalls inside the Market and all were very well supplied and very well attended. The photo on the left shows one of the many old warehouses on Granville Island which has been converted into shops. The second photo shows the sign for the Granville Island Public Market which appears over one of the five interconnected units making up the main part of the market. The third photo shows one of the decorated orcas placed around the island. The photo on the right shows another decorated orca. The photo on the left shows more of the downtown buildings. This photo was taken under the Granville Bridge and also shows the underside of the bridge. The center photo shows some of the dozen or so houseboats located on Granville Island. The photo on the right shows some of the interesting architecture of downtown Vancouver. We never did figure out why the architect twisted this building like this. The photo on the left shows Kelly and Carl ready to go watch whales. They're both wearing company supplied overalls to help protect them from excessive sea spray. The center photo shows Kelly and Carl on board the boat listening to the safety briefing. Both are in the front of the boat. The photo on the right shows Kelly aboard the whale watching boat. The photo on the left shows the Vancouver skyline from the whale watching boat. This was taken as they returned to the dock. None of the rest of Carl's photos from that day were usable - most were of the sky or the front of the boat or of his hand. It wasn't a very steady platform for picture taking. . . The photo on the left shows the whale watching boat coming under the Burrard Street Bridge on their way back to dock. The center photo shows the boat making the turn towards the dock. The photo on the right shows Carl and Kelly after they've stepped back onto the dock. Once they returned to shore and returned the coveralls, we roamed some more, then had dinner at Tap and Barrel. Good dinner, so-so service. Carl had fish and chips with a stout, I had maple glazed salmon with a cab, Kelly had seafood cioppino with a dark ale. Then we tood the Aquabus back across the harbor for the short walk back to our hotel. I was pooped. I was up past my bedtime! |
