After breakfast (and loading the car again), we drove to the train depot, where we had reservations to ride the Narrow Gauge Railroad. In the winter, they don’t take the train all the way to Silverton, just as far as a place called Cascade Junction, where it stops for almost an hour for lunch before returning to Durango. We had gotten Parlor Car tickets, which included an attendant, mimosas and danishes in the morning, and wine and cheese in the afternoon. The Parlor Car was attached at the end of the train and those in the Parlor Car were the only ones on the train allowed to stand on the rear outside platform while the train was moving. Guess where Carl and I spent most of our time? The three photos above were shot along the side of the train as it wound its way along the Animas River towards Cascade Junction.
The photo on the left above shows the steam engine venting steam before crossing a bridge over the Animas River. We had been alerted this would take place, so we were prepared. The photo on the right above shows the train winding along the banks of the Animas River as we neared Cascade Junction.
The three photos above show a closer view of the steam engine after it had pulled into Cascade Junction and we all disembarked to stretch our legs.
While we were stopped at Cascade Junction, we walked down by the river. As the two photos above show, there was still ice on the river.
The three photos above were taken from the platform on the back of the train. The photo on the left shows the Animas River flowing far below the train level. The center photo is a cut that the train passes through that was used in the filming of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. The photo on the right shows the retreating tracks as we neared Durango and the station.
The train returned to the station a little after 3 pm, so we jumped in the car and headed north. We asked our parlor car attendant to take our picture as we stood on the rear platform. She willingly obliged. We drove over three high passes - all over 10,000 in elevation - and spent the night in Ouray. The car did quite well over the passes.
