I got up about the normal time. Most of the group is checking out this morning, so there will be quite a caravan of cars heading out for the waterfalls - most with one or two people in them. I’m here one more night... We made quite a line going down the road... At least twelve cars. One signaled for me to back out in front of him. If I had backed up when he told me to, I would have smacked Eric’s Subaru... Fortunately, Eric moved and I joined the lineup. Our first stop was Multnomah Falls. The three photos above show three views of this famous waterfall, which is advertised as the second tallest continuously flowing waterfall in the country. The photo on the left shows the full height of the falls, which falls in two drops. The center photo shows the water falling behind the footbridge that crosses the lower section of the falls. The photo on the right shows the lower falls from the footbridge on. These three photos were also taken at Multnomah Falls. The photo on the left shows a small waterfall that came down the side of the cliff near the main falls and crossed under the walkway to the footbridge. The other two photos shows the upper falls near the footbridge and are basicaly the same view with the camera speed changed. Then on to Wahkeena Falls. The four photos above were taken at Wahkeena Falls. The photo on the left shows the cascades formed at the base of the falls. The second photo shows the full height of the falls. The remaining two photos were taken on opposite sides of a bridge spanning the widest drop of this waterfall. Then on to Bridal Veil Falls, which is down a 3/4 mile path. The three photos above show Bridal Veil Falls. The photo on the left shows the entire waterfall. The other two photos show how the falls look behind a cliff that it falls behind. I thought it looked like something from Lord of the Rings... On the way back to the parking lot, I got asked what kind of flower I was shooting, sir, er, ma’m... The person asking was part of a bicycle tour (Pedal Bike Tours) and, later, as I was looking the flower up in my book, she swung back by and told me it was a salmonberry blossom (left). She must have asked someone. Thanks! . Then to Latourell Falls. The three photos above show this waterfall. The photo on the left shows the length of the waterfall, while the other two zoom in at the top portion, again using a faster then slower shutter speed. I got left there by what was left of group. Most had already peeled off. Terry and Julie left without saying good-bye. Julie called just as I had gotten back to the car to say good-bye. The roads were really crowded today - it was a beautiful spring day and, since it was the weekend, everyone decided to visit the waterfalls. The parking lots were very crowded. What a day to have so many cars in our group! I think that’s why Terry and Julie missed me - I had had to park farther down the road at that last waterfall and they didn’t spot my car. On top of which, there were many, many bicyclists on the roads. I had to slow down several times waiting for a chance to pass them safely. So, I continued on to Vista Point for a quick look and a couple of photos. The photo on the left above shows the view looking east (upstream) from Vista Point. The center photo shows one of the lampposts here. The photo on the right shows the building at Vista Point and some of the parking lot. Then back down to the river. I stopped for lunch at Columbia Locks at a place called Char Burger. After lunch, I drove over the bridge there to the Washington side and a pleasant jaunt back to The Dalles. The scenery was a bit different on that side. The terrain really changed as I moved east. Lush forests in the morning with the waterfalls. Rugged cliffs along the river. Almost arid as one traveled south of The Dalles. After returning to the Oregon side at The Dalles, I stopped at an old schoolhouse Julie had told me about. Nice. Sure wish I could have gotten closer, but the barbed wire stopped me... The photos to the left and right show this old schoolhouse. The one on the right emphasizes just how far away from the road it was... Then back to the motel to run virus checks and start getting stuff sorted for my return flight. I had dinner at Spooky’s - a pizza place down the road from the motel. I had a wrap and a draft. It should be an early night... |
