Tuesday 5/8/07

We arrived at Rome's airport around noon. We were met by the transfer company and got a taxi ride to the Hotel Regno. Unfortunately, there was a small taxi strike going on and he had to drop us off about two blocks from the hotel. We navigated to the hotel quite easily...

We checked in and crashed for about three hours. As is typical with European rooms, this room is no larger than it has to be. It has two twin beds shoved together to make a sort of king sized one, small bedside tables, a desk, and an armchair. And a view of the main street in front of the hotel. And an in-room internet connection. Does anyone really use a bidet???? There would be a lot more room in the bathrooms if they could eliminate the bidet....

After our naps, we walked over to Trevi Fountain to check that out. It's only about two blocks from our hotel. Nice fountain, but new, compared to other things in Rome.

The photo on the left above shows most of the Trevi Fountain. The one in the center above is a detail of a portion of the fountain, showing one of the tritons with a calm sea horse. The one on the right shows Neptune and the other triton attempting to lead an unruly sea horse. The horses represent the two main faces of the sea - calm and stormy. The photo below shows another view of the Trevi Fountain and an office window next to it. For an idea of the scale of this fountain, notice the two women in the office window...

We had dinner not far from the fountain at Il Chianti Vineria. Nice dinner.

Trevi Fountain is even more of a zoo after dark. The photo on the left above was taken before dinner, before the crowds got really big! The photo on the right above was taken after dark and shows some of the fountain detail. It was one of the few uncrowded views of the fountain. There were street vendors harass tourists at every turn with things that light up, things that make noise, roses to throw into the fountain. We got tired of the congestion and confusion after a while and went back to the hotel for a good night's sleep.
