We slept in... Breakfast at Perkins again. The bananas from home that were left in fridge were frozen, so they were pitched into the trash... After breakfast, we packed up and headed south. The car has a lot more empty space now and we can see out all of the windows!!!

We took the Florida’s Turnpike to Ft. Pierce, where we had lunch at Cracker Barrel. No tomatoes on the sandwich or in the salad. There’s a major salmonella scare, so all the restaurants and grocery stores have pulled most of their tomatoes.

After lunch, we resumed our southern course. We got gas at Florida City, figuring that prices would be higher in the Keys. Nope. They were higher in Florida City.... We got rained on a couple of times on the way south.

We arrived at Key West about 6:30 and checked in to Southernmost on Duval. It used to be the southernmost hotel in the country, until its sister property built another hotel just across the street. Now it’s the southernmost on Duval Street. The one across the street is called Southernmost on the Beach...

A quiet beach, Southernmost Beach, Key West, FL

We dropped the bags in the room, which is very nice - wonderful bathroom - and headed for the beach. We started our Key West visit with Margaritas at the Beach Cafe, another portion of this large complex. A local tv station was having a party there at the time, so it got pretty noisy... The photo on the left shows the beach in front of the Beach Cafe.

Duffy's Steak and Lobster House, Key West, FL

After those drinks, we walked up Simonton to have dinner at Duffy’s - yum! A nice piece of salmon. The photo on the right shows what Duffy's looks like in the daylight. From there, we walked on to Mallory Square, but arrived after sunset. I could see the beautiful clouds from our window at Duffy’s, so I knew we would arrive too late. On our way up Duval Street, we saw a couple of drag queens...

The activities on Mallory Square had wound down, so we walked back to hotel. We were pretty tired. It’s about 1.5 miles from the hotel to Mallory Square... So, we took showers and headed off to bed.
