Wednesday, September 13, 2017 We got up earlier than usual so that we could both have time to dress. Carl's coming along on this day's journey. It was a very long day. We started at Bandon Beach. As you can see from the photo to the left, it was a cold, windy morning... Once the sun came up, it warmed up some. And, once we descended to beach level, getting out of the wind, it felt warmer. . . The photo on the left shows the predawn beach from the parking lot high above the beach. The other two photos show the waves and some of the sea stacks from beach level, once the sun started hitting them. As these three photos show, there was quite a variety of sea stacks along this stretch of beach. All three photos show different sets of sea stacks and the waves crashing around them. After a while, we climbed back up the stairs to the parking lot and moved to the next overlook north. This is still Bandon Beach, but it looks different from the next bluff over. These three photos were all taken at this second overlook (Coquille Point). Then we drove on to Cape Blanco for the lighthouse. It was very windy there. We walked north along the coast from the parking lot to get some photos of the lighthouse from a distance. The photo on the left shows the Cape Blanco Lighthouse and the coastline right below it. The center photo shows the lighthouse (zoomed in). The photo on the right shows the craggy rocks below the lighthouse. These are three views of the Cape Blanco Lighthouse. The photo on the left was taken from the parking lot outside the gates (zoomed). The center photo was taken after the gates finally opened and we moved to the parking lot near the base of the lighthouse. The photo on the right was taken from a grassy area just east of the lighthouse. Next, we had a stop for brunch at Port Orford at a place called TJ's. Excellent diner type food. Very good and very plentiful. Then it was on to Harris Beach, which was very foggy. Carl took all three of these photos. The photo on the left shows a grounded sea gull watching the waves. The center photo shows some of the large driftwood logs that littered this beach with a sea stack in the distance. The photo on the right shows me walking along the beach. So, when it's foggy, what do you shoot? The photo on the left shows a portion of a sea stack reflected in a tidal pool at its base. The photo on the right shows some of the weird patterns in the driftwood logs. There were plenty of logs to take pattern shots of. We had to scramble over them to reach just about anything on this beach. . So, we drove back north up the coast stopping at several stops along the Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor. Mr. Boardman helped establish the string of state parks along the Oregon coast. This was one of our stops along the Samuel H. Boardman Corridor. This location was called Natural Bridges and had a short path to a viewpoint where these arches over the water were visible. Most of the stops were just too foggy to see much. . We also stopped at Cape Sebastian for a while. These three photos were shot at Cape Sebastian. The photo on the left shows me shooting some of the sand dunes and grasses here. The other two photos are some of the sand dunes and grasses I was shooting. Still at Cape Sebastian. The photo on the left shows some other grasses growing along the side of the road that were blowing in the wind. The center photo shows Bill flying his drone over the beach. The photo on the right shows Carl clowning on top of a sand dune after sprinting to the top of it. The photo on the left shows the sea stacks, grasses, and coastline looking north at Cape Sebastian. The photo on the right was taken by Nancy Franklin and shows Carl and I taking it easy by the side of the parking lot with sea stacks behind us. Then we drove back to Bandon for the evening light. It was still windy and cold there, so I stayed up by the parking lot. Some of the others took the stairs down to the beach level. These two photos show the view to the north from this parking area. . . And these three photos show the more familiar view looking south from the parking area. Dinner was at Broken Anchor Bar in Bandon. The place was pretty busy (and noisy) and seemed to only have one waitress, who messed up Carl's simple order.... We finally got back to the room about 9:30. We were more than ready to crash. |
