Sunday, September 10, 2017 I gave up and got up at 5:15. We're meeting at the van at 6... We took off up the coast, stopping for coffee and donuts on the way. Our first photo stop was Cape Kiwanda. We climbed a sand covered hill for several shots. Dories were being launched and recovered. It was a nice stop! Dories are flat bottomed fishing boats that can be easily launched and recovered in a mild surf without needing a boat ramp or any other kind of boat launch. The photo on the left shows a dory being launched at the beginning of our stay at this beach. The center photo shows a different dory landing on the beach near the end of our stay at this location. The photo on the right shows the view from atop our tall hill, watching the waves on the shore. Three views of waves breaking along the rocks far below us. The photo on the left shows more crashing waves. . The photo on the right shows some layers of rock formations through the little bit of morning mist. . These four photos show crashing waves on a rock that was just below our hilltop. I slowed the shutter speed for the one on the far right. . . These four photos show more of the wave action we saw this morning from atop our hill. . . . . . . While walking around on the hilltop, I noticed this seagull posing with some waves crashing behind him. He stayed there for the longest time! I really liked this location, so you're treated to four more photos of waves crashing against this large rock. We finally came back down off of the hilltop. We discovered a much easier path through the deep sand for the descent. I sure wish we had noticed that route on the way up - much easier. These two photos were taken once we returned to the beach level and show a large seastack located just off shore. The hill we climbed is partially visible in the photo on the left.... . Our next stop was at Cape Meares which has a lighthouse. It was a steep walk down to the lighthouse. And an equally steep walk back to parking lot.... These three photos are of the lighthouse at Cape Meares. The center photo shows our first sighting of the lighthouse itself. The photo on the left shows the view as I drew nearer. The photo on the right shows the other side of the lighthouse as I'm bending backwards over the fence marking the edge of the cliff... These two photos show some of the breathtaking scenery visible on the walk to and from the lighthouse. There was a bit of fog along the coastline that morning. We made a couple of other stops in there, too, but not for photos. We walked down to the beach and watched part of a jet ski competition for a little while. It was pretty boring. All the action was taking place waaaaaaay out there and almost impossible to see from beach level. We stopped for lunch in Tillamook at Fern's. I had a most excellent omelet. It was one of those places where most of the cars in the parking lot had Oregon license plates. And one person we spoke with in the parking lot was a local resident. That's the kind of place to find for good food! On our way back down the coast, we stopped at Neskowin Beach to look for something Bill saw a photo of. It turns out it's not at at this parking area, but can only be reached by driving through a gated community and parking in a No Parking zone... Well, you could get there from the public access, but it involved hiking a little over a mile and wading a stream. We found this all out later... While we were looking to see if we could find the correct location, I got soaked by a rogue wave from the knees down.... So, we headed back to the hotel for a short break. I downloaded and labeled photos. Carl got to the room same time I did. He had had a lazy day here in the area – slept in, grabbed a paper and brunch within walking distance, then walked on the beach a bit. Just laid back. The photo on the right is one that Carl took while walking to the beach area. This is Nye Beach (Newport). In the distance, you can see the Yaquina Point Lighthouse, which we would visit later today. Then it was back to the van for an evening shoot. Our first stop was Boiler Bay. Bill got bored with shooting, so he launched his drone. We hit this location much later in the tour 13 years ago and I didn't think it would be very interesting. The photo on the left shows the four of us shooting the waves on the southern side of the parking lot. The photo on the right shows the waves on the northern side of the large parking lot. The three photos above show some of the wave action we were shooting on the southern end of the parking lot. The three photos above show some more of the wave action we were shooting on the southern end of the parking lot. These two photos were also taken in the same location as the ones above. For these, I closed in on some of the closer rocks and slowed the camera speed to give the water a softer look. It was better shooting than expected I expected, so we next headed straight to our sunset spot – Yaquina Head Lighthouse. The original plan for the afternoon had us stopping at one more spot. These two photos were taken of the Yaquina Head Lighthouse near sunset. It was very, very windy and cold at the pull-out we stopped in. Nancy's tripod broke. Bill and Carl fixed it. After fixing the tripod, Carl snapped this photo of the sunset itself. Then it was back to the hotel area for dinner at the Chowder Bowl. Carl had spotted it in his wanderings this morning. Very good eats. Then back to the room to download the rest of the day's photos and back up everything. Shower and bed... |
