We got up about 8... The skies are overcast and the wind is blowing... We had breakfast in the lobby - typical hotel breakfast. They offered to make waffles, but we stuck to our cereal. After breakfast, we drove out to the beach because it was sprinkling - we had planned to bike out there. It was completely different than either of us remembered. You just can’t go back... Not only has the area grown up (and junked up), but there’s now a fee to visit Assateague Island and the wildlife preserve. The beach area no longer has a lifeguard station, but more of the sand is now open for parking. And there’s two visitor’s centers. None of that was there before. The two photos above were taken as we strolled along the beach. The one on the left shows how some of the sand gets carved by the waves. Two fellow beach strollers are in the background. The one on the right shows the more common beach stroller we encountered today - a couple of seagulls. We walked on the beach for a while. I’m sure glad I put the North Face jacket in the car... Carl forgot his jacket, so he wore my spare one. (Later, we discovered his jacket - he had packed it in the backpack instead of the suitcase.) As we were sitting on a driftwood log, a seagull posed for us (see the two photos below)... I think he was looking for a handout... We had lunch at a local diner. Very forgettable... I had a softshell crab basket. It was okay, but... Carl had a crab cake sandwich. After lunch, we tried to go to NASA museum, but it’s closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays... So, we drove around the island for a while, then found a grocery store. We went back to room to spend the afternoon reading on the deck attached to our room. The two photos above were taken while we were driving around the island. We had pulled into the Memorial Park and spotted the Assateague Light across the water. Of course, I had to stop and take a picture or two or.... We had dinner at Bill’s, a very good meal. I had shrimp/scallops kabob and Carl had the crab cakes. Much better than lunch... Margarita’s just aren’t the drink to order here... Then we walked back to the room for movies and bed. I had managed to acquire several mosquito bites, despite the bug spray... |
