This photo shows a set of receeding doorways at Pueblo Escalante, located near the Anasazi Heritage Center, near Delores, CO. This hilltop pueblo probably sheltered a handful of families. Notice that the doorways are sort of keyhole shaped (wider at the top than the bottom). There is a lot of speculation as to why the doorways were built this way, but, of course, no one knows for certain. One possibility is that this enabled the top portion to be wide enough to comfortably carry items through the door yet left the bottom portion just wide enough for feet so that a leather flap could cover more of the door, keeping it warmer inside. Another is that it was just decorative.
