Sunday, November 5 Daylight saving time ends this morning. I got up at 6 (mst) and finished packing my suitcase. We ate breakfast, loaded the car, then got on the road. We left a little before 8. The rest area outside of Pueblo was closed for remodeling, so we stopped at the Cracker Barrel in Pueblo. On a Sunday morning... Lots of little old ladies and unsupervised preschoolers in the store area... We were soon on our way again. Lunch was in Raton at a lousy K-Bob's. Ugh! I drove from the first rest area after Raton to the edge of Albuquerque (no rest areas in there!!!!). We finally stopped at a gas station to pee and swapped drivers. Carl got to drive the Big I and on to Grants directly into the sun.... We were in Grants, NM, for tonight. It's a small motel on the edge of town. Now, where to eat dinner??? Dinner was at the WOW Diner in Milan, NM (the next exit down the road). We both had apricot orange chicken stir fry over rice and lo mein noodles. Yum! But more than either of us could finish - we really need to remember to split dinners. Back to the motel where we watched most of the last Harry Potter movie.... Monday, November 6 We got up about 6 and had breakfast (of sorts) at the motel. On were on the road again by 7:30. I drove from the Arizona border to the Meteor Crater rest area. We'll stop at the crater on the way back through. We continued on to Flagstaff for lunch at Altitudes. I had an okay pulled pork sandwich. The décor was skis and snowboards and related stuff. I got thoroughly lost in town (despite having attended college there for three years - it had changed!!!). I got very flustered... We finally stepped into the Visitor's Center after lunch and got maps. We passed on visiting the campus today. I intend to spend some time studying the map and maybe hit it later. We arrived at the Grand Canyon about 3. It sure is dark today. Between standard time and a solid overcast... We checked into the Maswik Lodge. What a nice room! Well, except for the hard beds and pillows! We walked over to the Rim (about half a mile away) and walked along it for a while. It was very windy. The photo on the left shows Carl sitting on the wall along the edge of the Village walkway with the Grand Canyon and a very overcast sky behind him. . The sun finally peeked through the edge of the overcast just before sunset for some interesting photo ops. I used the small camera. Dinner tonight was at El Tovar. We ate too much again... I had the halibut. Carl had a salmon tostado – very interesting... We saw six mule deer and two elk on the way back to the room. We managed to walk back to room without getting lost. I'm sure glad we stuck the flashlights in our pockets.... The Internet is almost useless this evening. |
