This photo shows the underground "backstage" portion of the Colosseum. This warren of underground passages allowed the gladiators and animals to be moved freely around the Colosseum. It included several "lifts" which would move the combatants into place on the Colosseum floor, appearing magically. It also contained cages for the animals awaiting combat.
The stage on the far side of the arena floor is a very modern addition and is used for public events. Around the sides of the Colosseum are the rows and rows of seating available. The lower levels were reserved for the nobility and the upper tiers were allocated to the peasants, slaves, and women of all classes. Only the Vestal Virgins were allowed to sit on the lower tiers of seats. They had front row seats, along with the senators. If you look closely at the photo above, on the left side you can see a cross. This is a modern addition and is placed where the emporers watched the games.
