Afterwards
Monday, December 7
Ah, a good night’s sleep! Amazing what a difference sleeping in one’s own bed makes! We took our time getting started today. Carl soon left to run some errands, including picking up a snow shovel so that we could shovel the driveway... Of course, he had to scoop the snow off of the car first... The apartments across the street from us are in the process of getting a new coat of paint and the old paint has been scraped off and repaired in places, making it look like a slum area... They're very nice apartment. I checked on the status of a couple of maintenance items with the office, then settled in to getting stuff resituated so that we could start unloading the truck some time this afternoon. It would snow off and on all day, with periods of sun. We got the truck about 2/3 unloaded before we started to lose our daylight and called it quits. It took another half hour for my legs to return to normal temperature... We took a break for dinner at Sweet Tomatoes. As we were leaving the restaurant, Carl turned to me and said it sure didn’t look like Orlando (where we’re usually eating at Sweet Tomatoes at this time of year) - he thought that Lee overdid it with the snow making machine... The rest of the day was spent settling in the stuff we had unloaded this afternoon. We now have a real table and chairs to eat at instead of using the card table and deck chairs! And I closely examined my plants. Of the eleven that we brought out this trip, six are definitely dead and unrecoverable. Two (the African violets) might recover - I’ll give them another week before deciding for sure (they didn't). The remaining three are the most primitive plants - two ferns and a Neanthe bella - and seem to be doing okay. I cut off the black and brown parts and there’s green left! Tuesday, December 8 There was more snow overnight - about an inch. The paper started delivery here today - it was waiting on the front porch for us in an orange baggie. Starting to feel like home! The high predicted for today is 10. The low last night was reported to be -4. Welcome to Colorful Colorado!!! We finished unloading the truck, except for two bookcases. We have to make room for them first, so they can stay in the truck for a while. Tomorrow, we’ll load a bunch of the stuff that’s destined for the storage unit back into the truck. Thursday or Friday, we’ll get rid of that and should be able to start getting the garage settled. Carl started working on the audio/visual configuration and we were able to watch tv this evening after pizza and beers at BJ’s. Wednesday, December 9 The sun is shining today!! Feels warmer, even though the high is only expected to get to 20. Carl took off midmorning to get the laundry done and I started tackling some of the paperwork that’s been sitting here waiting for me. Also filled out forms for moving M. P. Data to Colorado. Hmmmm. This one requires a valid Colorado driver’s license, yet one can’t apply for a change in driver’s license until one has lived here at least 90 days (unless you have a job or own a business). Sounds like a typical government catch-22.... When the governmentese started getting to me, I started loading boxes back on the truck for the storage unit... Life is settling into a routine here. I think we’re going to like it! Friday, December 11 We spent most of the afternoon at the storage unit, unloading the rest of the stuff. Whew! Monday, December 14 We bought our Christmas tree today. It took most of the evening and part of the next morning to get it decorated. Wednesday, December 16 We had some excitement last night. Our realtor called and said she was emailing us four (yes, four!!) offers for our house. All for more than the asking price! This morning, they arrived and we spent a few minutes going over them. Then Carl left for Copper Mountain and his first day on his shiny new season ski pass. I called the realtor and we talked over the four offers, putting them in order by what looked best. My first choice wasn't the highest offer (but by only $250), but the buyer is already preapproved for an 80% loan, so it seemed the most likely to be successful getting a loan and actually closing in a reasonable time frame. The couple who appears to be the buyers are an older couple interesting in downsizing now that their children are all married. They've met our former next door neighbors and seem to fit in with the neighborhood quite well. We were a little surprised to hear how well things are going, given today's economy... Fingers crossed that nothing falls through on this. Addendum - some photos of the apartment The photos above show my new office at the apartment. It's approximately half the square footage of what I had in Kingsport, yet I managed to get all the important stuff in. My desk is in storage, as are most of the books that were on the bookshelves. And my filing cabinet is in the garage along with most ot the office supplies (extra paper, blank dvds, etc). But this is workable. The photo on the left above shows the kitchen of the apartment. The photo on the right is part of the loft. The photos above show two views of our bedroom. The three photos above show views of the living room. The photo on the left was taken near the front door and features the Christmas tree and entertainment center. The center photo continues across the room, showing the edge of the entertainment center and the fireplace. The photo on the right was taken near the sliding glass doors that lead to the deck and show the view across the table into the kitchen. More photos of the living area.
